The Ship

The El Oso was a steam tanker built in 1921 for Sir W.G.Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd of Newcastle upon Tyne for Lobitos Oilfields Ltd. She grossed 7267 tons with overall dimensions of 454-227x57-6x27-5 feet, and was capable of making 11 knots.

History

From convoy HX 14B, she struck a mine at 9 am six miles west of the Bar (laid by U30 on the 9th January 1940) on the 11th January 1940, and sank 3 miles north of the Bar LV at 53 37 28 N 03 23 28 W. She lies in a depth of 22m with her bow upside down.The
